Activity 1- Substance

Paul Klee, famous artist and instructor at the Bauhaus, spoke of dividual or divisible substances. These types of substances differ from structures in that a portion of it can be removed and it will not lose its ultimate substance. Think of fish scales, stone walls, honeycombs, etc.

Looking at nature or even mechanical substances can serve as a great source of inspiration for architecture, industrial design, digital backgrounds, and animation. Do some research and try the following:

1. Sketch 5 different possibilities of divisible substance that will still retain its essence even if a portion is removed. Try to create your own feeling for your substance and do not just rely on grabbing images from the Internet. You can be inspired by nature, but allow your own hand to create. A mixed of techniques is encouraged.

2. Choose one of these substances and animate its formation and movement. How could this structure change, what type of rhythm could it suggest.

3A. Find a piece of music that relates to your form and compose a short (30 second animation piece that could be mixed with other clips). Try to make a clip that is “looped”.
3B. Or create an interactive animation in Flash based on the same principles as above.
